AI Overviews SEO: How to Get Cited in Google's AI Answers

A practical AI Overviews SEO playbook for Australian businesses: how AI Overviews pick sources, the content structure they lift, the schema to ship, and how to measure citations.

AI Overviews now sit above the organic results for a large share of Australian searches. They do not reward the same things a classic top-three ranking did. This guide covers what Google's AI answers actually pull from, how to structure pages so they are easy to quote, and how to track whether your business is being cited.

What an AI Overview is (and where it comes from)

An AI Overview is a generated summary Google places at the top of the results page for queries it judges informational or exploratory. It is assembled from a small set of pages Google retrieves for the query, then rewritten into a few sentences with links to the sources it leaned on.

Two consequences matter commercially. First, being ranked #4 or #7 no longer disqualifies you — retrieval for the Overview draws on a wider pool than the visible top three. Second, an Overview that fully answers the question absorbs the click, so the pages that still earn visits are the ones tied to a decision: pricing, comparisons, local providers, booking.

In Search Console this shows up as impressions holding or rising while clicks on informational queries fall. That is a format change, not a penalty.

How AI Overviews choose their sources

Passage-level relevance. Google retrieves the specific passage that answers the query, not the page as a whole. A 2,000-word guide with one crisp 50-word definition can be cited for that definition alone.

Extractability. Content the model can lift cleanly wins: a direct answer immediately under a question-shaped heading, short declarative sentences, tables for comparisons, ordered lists for processes.

Corroboration. Claims that agree with other reputable sources are safer to summarise. Numbers, dates and prices that can be verified elsewhere get quoted more than unsupported assertions.

Entity clarity. Google needs to know who is speaking. Consistent business name, address, service descriptions and author credentials across your site, your Google Business Profile and third-party listings all raise your odds of being named.

Freshness where it counts. For anything price-, policy- or platform-related, a visible review date and current figures beat an older page that is otherwise stronger.

Page structure that gets lifted

Lead with the answer. Put a 40 to 60 word direct answer in the first paragraph under the H1, phrased as a complete sentence that would read correctly if it were quoted with no surrounding context.

Use question-shaped H2s and H3s that mirror real queries — "How much does AI Overviews optimisation cost?" rather than "Investment". Follow each heading with its answer in the first two sentences, then the supporting detail.

Add one structured block per page: a comparison table, a numbered process, or a specification list. These are disproportionately quoted because they need no rewriting.

Keep one topic per URL. Pages that try to cover five questions get outranked for each of them by pages that cover one properly.

Include specifics only you have: your own data, local examples, real timeframes, actual price ranges. Generic advice is already summarised from a hundred other sources.

Suggested schema for an AI Overviews page

Schema does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about what your page says and who published it — and FAQ markup mirrors the question-and-answer shape these systems consume.

Ship four types on an article like this one: Article (headline, description, datePublished, dateModified, author, publisher), FAQPage (each visible question with its answer as text), BreadcrumbList (site, blog, article), and Organization on the site root with sameAs links to your profiles.

For service pages add Service with a provider reference and areaServed set to your real coverage, plus LocalBusiness with consistent NAP data. For anything with prices, use Offer or AggregateOffer with priceCurrency AUD.

Two rules that catch most sites out: every FAQ answer in schema must appear visibly on the page, and dateModified must be genuine. Marked-up content that is not on the page, or a modified date that never changes, both erode trust in your markup.

Validate with Google's Rich Results Test and keep one JSON-LD block per type — duplicated or conflicting blocks are a common cause of silent failures.

Measuring whether it worked

Build a prompt set: 30 to 50 queries your buyers actually type, split into informational, commercial and local. Record monthly whether an AI Overview appears, whether you are cited, and which URL is cited.

In Search Console, watch impressions against clicks by query group rather than at site level. Rising impressions with flat clicks on informational queries is expected; falling impressions on commercial queries is the problem worth fixing.

Track assisted outcomes too. AI answers often shorten the research phase, so branded search volume, direct traffic and phone enquiries frequently move before organic sessions do.

Give it a quarter. Retrieval sets change slowly, and citation gains typically appear four to eight weeks after the content and schema work lands.

Common mistakes

Burying the answer under 300 words of preamble. If the answer is not extractable in the first screen, it will not be quoted.

Chasing AI Overviews on transactional queries where Google rarely shows one. Check the SERP first, then decide the format.

Blocking AI crawlers by default. If you want citations, the systems that generate them need access — decide that deliberately rather than inheriting a restrictive robots.txt.

Publishing thin FAQ pages purely for schema. Both Google's systems and readers discount them, and they can dilute the page that should be ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI Overviews SEO?
AI Overviews SEO is the practice of optimising a website so Google's AI-generated answer panels retrieve and cite it. It focuses on passage-level clarity, question-led structure, verifiable claims, entity consistency and structured data, rather than only on classic ranking position.
Do I need to rank in the top three to appear in an AI Overview?
No. Google retrieves candidate passages from a wider pool than the visible top three results, so pages ranking on the first or second page can be cited. Strong organic performance still helps, but a clearly answered passage often matters more than exact position.
Are AI Overviews reducing my organic traffic?
They typically reduce clicks on informational queries while leaving commercial and local queries far less affected. The usual signature is stable or rising impressions with falling clicks on how-to and definition searches. The response is to protect decision-stage pages and aim for citations on the informational ones.
Which schema types matter most for AI Overviews?
Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Organization for content pages; Service, LocalBusiness and Offer for commercial pages. Every marked-up answer must also appear visibly on the page, and dateModified must reflect real updates.
How long does it take to get cited in AI Overviews?
In our experience with Australian sites, citation changes usually appear four to eight weeks after content restructuring and schema fixes are live, with a clearer picture at the three-month mark once retrieval sets refresh.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Only if you do not want to be cited. Blocking AI user agents in robots.txt removes you from the sources these answers can draw on. Most Australian service businesses gain more from being named as the answer than they lose from summarised content.

Where to next

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews cite passages, not pages — give every page one quotable 40 to 60 word answer.
  • Question-shaped headings, tables and numbered processes are the formats most often lifted verbatim.
  • Ship Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Organization schema, and keep dateModified honest.
  • Measure a fixed prompt set monthly; treat citation share as the KPI, not position alone.
